Dental Sealants

WHAT DO THEY DO?

They help to prevent decay on the biting surface of the tooth. Once applied, they flow into the depressions and grooves of your teeth and prevent accumulation of food particles and bacteria. Children and adults can benefit from sealants. They will prevent tooth decay if applied as early as a tooth erupts.

HOW A SEALANT IS APPLIED?

This simple procedure only takes few minutes to seal each tooth. A tooth colored acrylic flowable material is coated(painted) onto the surface of the tooth and then cured with a blue light. This forms a protective seal on the deep grooves, acts as a barrier and protects enamel from bacteria and acids. Sealants can last several years before a reapplication is needed.

HOW IS A CANDIDATE FOR SEALANTS?

It is recommended that every child 6 years of age and above see the dentist to get sealants placed. Your first permanent tooth is the lower molar, that erupts around 6 years of age. Your dentist can give you the timeline for the next sealant application

CAN SEALANTS BE PLACED OVER CAVITIES?

Yes. If the decay is very small, sealant application may prevent the progression. Further, your dentist will keep an eye on the tooth to make sure the sealant is doing its job.
